In1987, on the basis of the Technological Faculty of the Leningrad Institute of Refrigeration Industry, the Department of Food Biotechnology was established, later renamed the Department of Food Biotechnology products from plant raw materials. This name of the department is still preserved.
The founder of the department and its head up to 2003 was Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor I.M. Vasilynets. From 2003 to 2016, the department was headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Т.V. Meledina, who has done much to expand and strengthen the scientific and educational positions both in the university and in industry. Now she is a professor of the department and heads the most important educational and research areas. Since 2016 the department is headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences A.V.Fedorov.
